(Franklin County, IN) – The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office says a Cedar Grove man has been arrested in connection with a hit and run investigation that began Saturday evening on the 1,000 block of Mortashed Road.

The investigation and tips from the public led deputies to a house on the 4,000 block of Mueller Road near Cedar Grove.

While executing a search warrant at the house, deputies found the suspect’s vehicle, a green 1997 GMC Sonoma pick-up truck.

35-year-old Cade Barnes was arrested without incident on preliminary charges of Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident, and Driving While Suspended – Habitual Traffic Violator (both Level 6 felonies).

Barnes was lodged in the Franklin County Law Enforcement Center in lieu of $1,055 bond.

Deputies are thanking the community for providing tips which helped lead to an arrest in the case.

If convicted of a Level 6 felony, Barnes can face up to two and a half years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is emphasizing that the preliminary charges Barnes is facing are for booking and bail purposes only.

Once the investigation is finished, deputies will forward their findings to the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office for consideration of what, if any, formal charges would be filed against him.

Local News – WRBI Radio (14)(Franklin/Ripley Counties, IN) – The Franklin/Ripley County Traffic Safety Partnership (FRCTSP), which consists of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and the Batesville Police Department, is teaming up with law enforcement from across the state to urge people to buckle up prior to the national Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement effort.

The national seat belt campaign, which coincides with the Memorial Day holiday, runs now through June 2.

The overtime patrols are funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) with grants administered by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI).

“We want seat belt use to be an automatic habit for drivers and passengers alike,” said ICJI Traffic Safety Director. “Buckling up is the simplest thing you can do to limit injury or save your life during a crash.”

Indiana’s seat belt use rate in 2023 was 93.2%.

Buckling up can reduce the risk of injury or death in a crash by up to 65%.

Without a seat belt fastened, people can be ejected from a vehicle and killed.

“If the enforcement effort alerts people to the dangers of unrestrained driving, we’ll consider our mission to be a success,” said Sgt. Adam Henson, FRCTSP Traffic Safety Coordinator. “If you know a friend or family member who does not buckle up when they drive, please ask them to consider changing their habits. Help us spread this lifesaving message before one more friend or family member is killed as a result of this senseless inaction. Seat belts safe lives, and everyone-front seat and back, child and adult-needs to remember to buckle up.”

For more information on the Click it or Ticket seat belt enforcement blitz, visit NHTSA.gov/ClickIt.

Local News – WRBI Radio (20)(Indianapolis, IN) – The State of Indiana is now accepting applications for students to participate in the Career Scholarship Account (CSA) program during the upcoming school year.

The first-in-the-nation CSA program provides $5,000 annually for 10th through 12th grade students enrolled in eligible work-based learning programs, including internships, apprenticeships, applied learning experiences and credential attainment experiences.

“In K-12 education, we have an incredible opportunity to help every student find their purpose, know their value and understand the possibilities for their life’s path,” said Dr. Katie Jenner, Indiana Secretary of Education. “In order to maximize the four years of high school, we must work together to ensure more students have access to quality experiences that set them up for success, including high-quality work-based learning and educational attainment opportunities. Indiana’s CSA program is one way to remove barriers, such as transportation, and ensure more students have the opportunity to experience careers and earn a credential of value while still in high school.”

Indiana’s CSA program provides all students the opportunity to explore their interests, gain hands-on experience and build skills that will ensure a seamless transition from high school to higher education and quality careers. CSA funds can be used to cover eligible expenses in the following categories:

  • Enrollment fees for courses, sequences, apprenticeships or programs of study;
  • Career coaching and navigation services;
  • Postsecondary education and training;
  • Transportation and equipment; and
  • Certification and credentialing examinations.

“Career exploration through work-based learning programs is incredibly valuable to a student’s journey to determine their ideal pathway after high school,” said Indiana Commissioner for Higher Education Chris Lowery. “As students receive more flexibility to participate in these hands-on experiences, Indiana’s CSA Program will remove potential barriers and increase opportunities for students to discover possibilities for education and training beyond high school.”

Through a coordinated cross-agency effort, the Indiana Department of Education approves eligible programs, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education approves eligible providers and the Treasurer of State approves eligible students and provider expense reimbursem*nts.

“We are really excited to see how Career Scholarship Accounts will continue to provide great alternative career paths for our students,” said Daniel Elliott, Indiana Treasurer of State. “With apprenticeship programs gaining momentum, this is another example of how Indiana is leading the way in offering more options for school choice, ensuring that everyone can find the path that’s right for them.”

Students at any Indiana high school are encouraged to apply. Applications for the 2024-2025 school year will be accepted through Tuesday, October 1.

Visit the student resources page for additional information on the CSA program, eligibility requirements and to access the student application.

Additional details on how funds may be used can be found here.

There’s been a bit of a shakeup in local high school basketball. A new head boys’ coach has been hired at Greensburg, someone about as solid a Pirate as possible. That young man is current baseball assistant and Dean of Students, Collin Rigney. He played for the Pirates’ back-to-back state championship hoops teams of 2013 & 14, and graduated Ball State in ’18. Rigney’s just wrapping up his first year as Dean for his alma mater, and was an assistant for a time when current Athletic Director Stacy Meyer was head coach. Meyer says he looks forward to a smooth transition. Former Coach Shaun Busick, who guided the Pirates to a good 18 & 8 record this past season, has had his retirement accepted by the school board this week.

More sectional tournament diamond action is on tap tonight. One of last night’s results leads into tonight’s lineup, as Jac-Cen-Del’s Eagle girls beat Waldron Monday, 13-4. That puts the Eagles up against the Oldenburg Academy Twisters tonight, our first game of the evening on the air, pregame coverage starting at 5:45. Tonight’s second game has Brown County visiting Milan. That one begins around 7:30 this evening. Last night’s other contests weren’t much in the way of contests, North Decatur eliminating South Decatur 16-0, and Franklin County taking out Batesville, 11-1.

Other softball games tonight include South Dearborn and Lawrenceburg, East Central up against Columbus North, and Greensburg taking on Connersville.

The Reds are back in Cincinnati tonight after their western road trip, and one of those teams, the Padres, tagged along. We’ll join the network broadcast when softball wraps up this evening on 103.9 FM, WRBI.

Monday was a day to dial in race setup at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. A total of 2,655 laps were turned by the 33-car field. Those putting in the most laps were Tom Blomqvist (106), Christian Rasmussen (100), Felix Rosenqvist (99), and Colton Herta (96). The top speed on the day belonged to Josef Newgarden, at 226.238 miles an hour. His Team Penske colleague Will Power ran the 3rd-quickest speed at 226.137.

The NBA postseason’s going into the Eastern Conference finals Game 1 tonight, the Pacers coming off a strong performance against the Knicks in semi-final Game 7 in New York. Indiana will need all its best men in place, and running positions, in Game 1 of the best of 7 against the Celtics in Boston. Tonight’s game tips at 8:00.
