Rewinding Oregon State’s 6-4 lead over UC Irvine as game postponed until Monday (2024)

Sunday’s Corvallis Regional final between Oregon State and UC Irvine was stopped in the bottom of the fourth inning because of rain. The game will resume at 12:06 p.m. Monday, with Oregon State leading 6-4.

UC Irvine must win to force a second game. If OSU wins one, it wins the regional and advances to the super regional at Kentucky next weekend. The game is televised, and a second if necessary, on ESPN+.

Here is a rewind of what took place until the game was halted.

LIVE UPDATES

Current score: Oregon State 6, UC Irvine 4 (B4) GAME STOPPED BECAUSE OF RAIN, RESUMES AT 12:06 P.M. MONDAY

FOURTH INNING

McCaffrey is hit with the first pitch. The weather is ridiculous right now. This isn’t baseball. Officials are getting together with the coaches. Let’s see ... OK, after several minutes, game is officially delayed. Check back occasionally and we’ll try to have updates on resumption of the game.

As we begin the fourth, Kentucky finishes off Indiana State 5-0 to win the Lexington Regional. The winner of this regional, OSU or UC Irvine, will head to Lexington to play the Wildcats in a best-of-3 super regional this weekend. McDowell leads off with a single. Turley strikes out. Macias doubles to right, but he can’t stop, overruns the bag, and is tagged out. It’s ruled a single, obviously. McDowell to third. McDowell runs home when Brooks throws a wild pitch. Oregon State 6-4. Editorial comment: this is stupid. Stop playing in this weather. It’s getting dangerous with the wild throws and slip slides. OK, end of rant. Kasper walks on four pitches. Weber grounds out to second. (1 run, 2 hits, 0 errors, 1 left)

THIRD INNING

Kendle flies out to center to start the UC Irvine third. Martinez strikes out. Gleed, who hit a three-run homer in the first, walks on four pitches. Bermudez hits one into short right field, which Bazzana fields and throws him out at first. (0 runs, 0 hits, 0 errors, 1 left)

Kasper leads off the inning by grounding out to short. Weber is hit by a pitch, and he’s aboard at first. Hainline works eight pitches to get a walk, runners at first and second. Guerra hits a fly ball to the right field corner, but Call makes a sliding catch for the second out. Runners hold. Trosky hits a ball into the hole at short. Hadeen dives to stop it to save a run, but it’s a single. Bases loaded for Bazzana, who flies out to left. UC Irvine has already thrown 76 pitches. (0 runs, 1 hit, 0 errors, 3 left).

SECOND INNING

Oyama leads off UC Irvine’s half of the second with a walk. Hadeen struck out, Segura’s second K of the game. Smith grounds into a double play. (0 runs, 0 hits, 0 errors)

Kasper leads off the inning with a walk. UC Irvine already going to the pen, turns to David Utagawa, who makes his third appearance in three days. Weber works the count, and gets aboard on a walk. Runners at first and second. Hainline clears the bases with a three-run homer to right center. OSU within 4-3. Guerra walks. That’s the seventh walk of the game between the two teams, and we’re barely into the second inning. Guerra moves to second on a wild pitch. Trosky hits a ball between short and second that Hadeen knocks down but can’t make a play. Runners at first and third, no one out. Ryder Brooks relieves Utagawa, who throws to four batters and doesn’t get an out. Bazzana hits a sacrifice fly to center to score Guerra and tie the game at 4-4. McDowell flies out to right. Trosky remains at first. Trosky advances to second on a wild pitch. Turley smacks one to center, hits the fence on one hop for a double, Trosky scores. OSU leads 5-4. Macias hits one to the track in right, but is out to retire the side. (5 runs, 3 hits, 0 errors, 1 left)

FIRST INNING

UC Irvine takes its turn as the home team. Hadeen leads off with what they say is a good piece of hitting. Takes advantage of a slight shift and takes one the opposite way for a single to left. Smith walks on four pitches. After Segura throws a ball to Kendle, pitching coach Rich Dorman visits the mound. Probably a worthwhile visit. Segura works count to 3-0 before finally throwing a strike. Ultimately, Kendle walks, loads the bases with no outs. Martinez grounds to second, he’s thrown out. Hadeen scores, while Smith and Kendle move to second and third. Gleed empties the bases as he rocks a fastball to left-center field to give Anteaters a 4-0 lead. Bermudez walks on four pitches. McCaffrey grounds to third, Beavers just miss getting a double play as he narrowly beats the throw to first. Call struck out, and inning is finally over after Segura throws 40 pitches. (4 runs, 2 hit, 0 errors, 1 left)

Oregon State bats as the visiting team tonight. Beavers in home gray uniforms. Bazzana strikes out to start the game. McDowell bunts, but it’s an easy put out for Martinez, the first baseman. Might take a run through the lineup for OSU to get in sync with slow, somewhat sidearmed delivery of Rincover. Turley walks, first OSU batter to reach base. Macias struck out swinging. (0 runs, 0 hits, 0 errors, 1 left)

We’re on

Go time.
