Three West Virginia casinos have poker rooms. The limits tend to be on the smaller side. The most common game is Texas hold’em, which is typically dealt in fixed- and no-limit formats. There are also fixed- and pot-limit Omaha hi/lo games in West Virginia poker rooms.

Online poker is legal in West Virginia. However, no sites have launched. Legal and licensed West Virginia online casino games and mobile sportsbooks are available.

Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races poker room

The Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races spreads 17 poker tables. Eight players are seated per table. The poker room opens at 9am Wednesday through Sunday. It closes at 6am on weekend nights and 3am on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. The Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races poker room is dark on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The main game is 1/2 no-limit Texas hold’em with a $100 to $400 buy-in. A 2/5 no-limit or 3/6 fixed-limit hold’em game is also available. The 2/5 game has a $300 to $1,000 buy-in range.

A 2/2 pot limit Omaha cash game is dealt every Friday at 3pm. There is a 5/10 no limit hold’em game on Saturday mornings at 9am.

Hollywood Casino hosted poker tournaments five days a week before the pandemic closure. At the time, there was a $135 no-limit Texas hold’em tournament at 11am on Monday and Thursday. There was also a $200 no-limit hold’em tournament at 6 pm on Friday and Sunday. A similar 6pm tourney on Saturday offered a $225 buy-in. These tournaments are currently suspended.

Hollywood Casino offers poker promotions every day the room is open. These are usually high hands, bad beat jackpots, and hourly cashback for loyal players.

Current promotions, as of June 2024, include winning up to $1000 for making a royal flush with both hole cards. Hitting on the flop pays $1000. It is $500 for the turn and $250 for the river. High hand promotions pay $100 for aces full, $200 for quads, and $300 for a straight flush.

The bad beat jackpot pays $5000 to the loser, $2500 to the winner, and a table share of $2500 divided among all other players dealt in the hand. The minimum qualifying hand is aces full of kings. Both hole cards must be used.

Players who give 50 hours of qualifying cash game action in June 2024 receive $50. It is $125 for 75 hours and $250 for 100 hours. The PennPlay card must be used to participate in this promotion.

Mardi Gras Casino poker room

The Mardi Gras Casino poker room reopened on July 15, 2021. Its hours are 3pm to 3am on Wednesday and Thursday and noon to 3am on Fridays and Saturdays. The poker room is closed on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays.

The main game is 1/2 no limit hold’em. The buy-in is $50 to $500. If a 2/5 game happens, it has a $200 to $1,500 buy-in range. There may also be a 1/2 pot limit Omaha, spread limit seven card stud, or fixed limit hold’em game.

At the Mardi Gras poker room, there are two main types of promotions offered. There are bad beat jackpots and high hands, which run daily. In June 2024, there are $50 high hands and a spin the wheel promotion for making a full house with jacks full of deuces or better.

The Texas hold’em bad beat jackpot hits on a hand of aces full of kings or better losing. Both hole cards must be used. For the full house, pocket aces must lose. In seven card stud, the losing hand must be aces full of sevens. In Omaha, quad deuces or better must lose.

The Mardi Gras poker room canceled all tournaments on October 26, 2022.Tournaments never returned.

Wheeling Island poker room

On October 22, 2021, the Wheeling Island poker room reopened. There are nine tables in the poker room. It is open 5pm to 1am on Wednesdays, 3pm to 3am on Thursdays, 10am to 4am on Fridays and Saturdays and noon to midnight on Sundays. The Wheeling Island poker room is dark on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The only regular game Wheeling Island offered is 1/3 no-limit Texas hold’em. A pot-limit Omaha game with the same buy-ins may appear during busy times. There is an occasional 3/6 fixed limit hold’em game.

Wheeling Island has brought back tournaments starting in May 2023. There are no limit hold’em tournaments at 1pm on Sundays. The buy-in is $40 with a $10 admin fee and $10 dealer appreciation stack.

The current promotions include payouts for specific high hands of four of a kind and royal flush suits. Players who give four hours of cash game action on Wednesdays and Thursdays receive a $34 buffet comp.

Closed West Virginia poker rooms

The Casino Club at Greenbrier poker room

There were two tables in the Greenbrier poker room. It appears to be permanently closed.

During normal operations, the room opened at 7pm and closed when the last game broke. The Greenbrier poker room was only open to hotel guests or members of the resort’s private clubs, as part of the only private casino in the United States. Proper attire is required. For men, that means a jacket.

The main game at the Greenbrier poker room was no-limit Texas hold’em. Tournaments were spread during busier tourism times, typically a $30 one on Thursdays and a $250 tourney on the first Saturday of the month.

Mountaineer Casino poker room

The Mountaineer Casino’s poker room is permanently closed. It hosted 14 tables and was open 24 hours a day.

The main games at Mountaineer were 1/2 no-limit Texas hold’em and 2/4 fixed-limit. The buy-in range for the no-limit game was $75 to $300. During normal operations, there was a $55 tournament three days a week. It started at 10:30am on Wednesday, 2pm on Sunday, and 7:30pm on Monday. On the last Sunday of the month, the $55 buy-in was replaced with a $120 buy-in no-limit hold’em tournament.

West Virginia online poker

Online poker was legalized at the same time as online casinos in West Virginia. However, no poker sites ever launched.

Delaware, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, and West Virginia entered into an interstate online poker compact. Online poker is live in four of those states. West Virginia poker sites will likely open in 2024. BetMGM is licensed in West Virginia and has legal online poker in Michigan and New Jersey.
